JOLIE HOLLAND: That song is a joke.
I wrote it during a waitressing shift. It was 7 o'clock in the
morning and I was tired, my bones were creeky. There is this
American song, it's like a gospel song that goes: "gimme
that old time religion, it's good enough for me". It was
just funny to me.
Old fashion morphine, de grap van de Texaanse zangeres Jolie Holland.
Het komt van haar tweede cd Escondida, die sinds vandaag
in de platenwinkel ligt. Maar als ik in die platenwinkel zou
werken, zou ik bij God niet weten in welke bak Escondida
te stoppen? Die van de folk misschien? Of de blues? De jazz?
De country? Er zit zelfs klezmer tussen.
JOLIE HOLLAND: I'm in the rocksection.
And I think it's totally appropriate. I used to be in the folksection
and that kinda annoyed me actually, because I don't see my music
as anymore folk than Bob Dylan's music.
al is Jolie Holland nog geen Bob Dylan
natuurlijk! Maar muziek zat haar al wel behoorlijk vroeg in het
bloed. Ze schreef haar eerste song toen ze amper 6 was. En als
kind leerde ze zichzelf piano en op haar 13de begon ze met viool.
JOLIE HOLLAND: Yeah, I definitely
knew I wanted to be a musician. I really liked classical music
when I was a kid and I thought that was what you did. I wondered
about popmusic, but I didn't really like it. I wasn't inspired
by popmusic when I was a kid. So, I thought if I was gonna play
music, I was gonna be like a composer. I actually play the first
song I wrote when I was six on this record.

Lil' missy en
daarvoor Tiny idyll. Dat korte stukje op een speelgoedpiano
was de allereerste compositie van Jolie Holland. Ze heeft het
nu opgenomen voor haar nieuwe cd Escondida.
Sinds kort is ze voltijds met muziek bezig, daarvoor had ze allerlei
baantjes. En zoals ik al zei: ze speelt viool en piano. En ook
gitaar. Maar het maakt allemaal niet uit
JOLIE HOLLAND: In my mind a song can
be played a zillion different ways. Any of these songs can be
rocksongs or any of these songs can be instrumental chamber pieces.
Music is the best, you know! Maar vaak
heeft een muzikant toch één instrument dat eruitspringt,
bijvoorbeeld dat waar die mee componeert. Hoe zit dat bij deze
Miss Holland? Piano? Gitaar? Viool?
JOLIE HOLLAND: My head! Like a lot
of times I just grab the first instrument I find and just play
the song on that. Sometimes I'll write a song particulary on
the piano or I'll write a song particulary on the guitar, but
I really try not to let the instrument dictate the song. Because
I think some of the first songs I ever wrote I would just play
what I could play and then I would make a melody to go with it.
But I really try to turn that around and let it come from the
inside out.
