Mugison uit z'n jongste cd Mugimama
(Is this monkeymusic?), voorlopig alleen in IJsland verschenen
op 12 Tónar. Dat is het nieuwe label van de winkel met
dezelfde naam in Reykjavík. En voor Etoiles Polaires zakt
de hele handel af naar Gent. Er is daar de komende weken trouwens
zoveel te zien en te horen dat we hier onmogelijk alles kunnen
aanstippen. Kijk zeker op www.vooruit.be voor meer details en
het laatste nieuws.
Het festival begint woensdag met een vernissage, babbels en korte
performances in de Vooruit en de film Nói Albínoi
in Studio Skoop.
Donderdag zijn er twee veelbelovende festivalproducties. In de
Theaterzaal maakt Geert Waegeman met twee Groenlanders en percussionist
Petur Gretarsson uit IJsland de muzikale vertelling Shaman.
En in de Balzaal om tien uur is er de première van een
nieuw Think of One-project met drie Inuit-keelzangeressen uit
de ijsvlaktes van Québec. Volgens David Bovée is
het een van hun "graafste" dingen ooit, dus dat belooft!
En dat mag je ook wel zeggen van de gratis "double bill"
vrijdag om elf uur in het Kafee met Kira Kira en Mugison. Kira
Kira is het alter ego van Kristin Björk Kristjansdóttir
van de muzikale denktank Kitchen Motors, en een van de curatoren
van Etoiles Polaires. Solo brengt ze minimalistische blieps en
blops zoals je op de achtergrond hoort. En Mugison, die hebben
vorige week al voorgesteld. Hij belooft niets meer of minder
dan apenkuren.
MUGISON: Well I'll do the monkey show
I think, I'll do the standard monkey show: have my box with some
tricks. I'll do the usual electronic karaoke set up, some laptop
and a guitar and a microphone, and I try to enjoy it as much
as I can. It's a very nice computer program that works in loops
and also I can record live, and it loops naturally, spontaneously.
So it loops lalala, lalala, lalala. I could be singing over
it, and do the usual electronic tricks, tsjakkaprr, eih, as a
gimmick. And maybe put on a face expression and fool some people.
Ook op vrijdag maar dan in de Domzaal:
Karanova, een Belgische-IJslands dubbelkwartet met Peter Vermeersch,
de Kitchen Motors-kern en ook Mauro Pawlowski. En in de Balzaal
om half tien staat het Orkest Bricolage met muzikanten van Slowblow
en múm. Ze spelen Helvitis microphonia onder leiding
van Orri Jónsson van Slowblow. Hij wil aan de slag met
kleine instrumenten, versterkt door oude microfoons. Niet voor
niets wordt hij in Reykjavík "Mister Analog"
genoemd: speeltjes als een gsm of een laptop zijn niet aan hem
besteed.

JONSSON: I may be very old fashioned in this way too because
I don't like to work with anything - either photography or film
or music or anything - in a way that I know what I'm gonna do.
I like to work on some level unconsciously. Like when I'm a photograph,
I don't imagine the photo in my head, like how it will look like.
I just look through the camera, I frame it and I shoot, and I
don't think about it. If I could imagine the image in my head,
I wouldn't bother to click the shutter. Or if I would know what
a song was going to sound like, I would bother writing it or
recording it. I think the process is important, to let the process
teach you something.

zo heet dit nummer van múm uit hun jongste ep Dusk
log. Maar het is ook meteen een perfecte beschrijving van
de muziek van múm waarin stemmen en teksten net zoals
de andere geluiden bijna toevallig in de verte voorbij waaien.
GUNNAR ÖRN TYNES & ÖRVAR
SMARASSON: No, they're never in the front, they're always
hiding behind something and they're just shadows of something.
They're just a part of the music. It's vague pictures with backwards
half hushed stories but far away. It's more like using vocals
and words as an instrument instead of having a song with a lyric
that draws all the focus to itself. People find more reason somehow
in listening to vocals and lyrics than the whole texture you're
getting from the music.
Gunnar en Örvar van múm,
wellicht de bekenste IJslanders op Etoiles Polaires. Zaterdag
komt de groep naar Gent met een soort hoorspel gebaseerd op Sleeping
bicycle, een boek van de IJslandse cultauteur Gyrdir Eliasson.
En daarna stelt Slowblow de nieuwe cd voor, met muzikanten
van múm.
Heel andere koek zaterdag om tien uur
in de Balzaal van de Vooruit. Dan staat Jóhann Jóhannsson
op de planken met zijn Apparat Organ Quartet. En toch is er ook
daar een link naar Slowblow en múm. Want allemaal hebben
ze een bijzondere voorliefde voor het traporgel of de harmonium.
 JÓHANN
JÓHANNSSON: Especially the pumporgan or the harmonium
has a deep connection with Iceland because for a long time that
was one of the few instruments that you had. In a typical Icelandic
home you'd have much rather have a harmonium than a piano for
example. For example in my grandfather's home there was a harmonium
and I've got it now. And the earliest music in Iceland was played
on harmoniums rather than more than anything else really. There
weren't many string or brass ensembles or organized orchestras
in Iceland. So the organ is a very Icelandic instrument. And
I had the idea of getting together four electric organ players
to collaborate and try to do something together. This was very
much inspired by Steve Reich piece "Four organs". We're
all very interested in this early minimalist stuff which was
often written for rock instruments like electric organs and thing
like that. We wanted to see how this would sound live. But that
idea never happened becauce we immediately started to write our
own music. Very soon after that we added a drummer and it became
more rhythmic, more mechanical but still all very hand played.
There no sequencers so it's very analog and very manual.

van Apparat Organ Quartet en als je wilt meerijden moet je zaterdag
naar het Etoiles Polaires festival in de Vooruit.
En over meerijden gesproken: ook zaterdag maar dan om elf uur
komt Trabant gratis naar het Kafee van de Vooruit. Hun muziek
klinkt als een hobbelig karretje en rijdt bovendien op een bizarre
mix van brandstoffen. Maar de jongens van Trabant zijn dan ook
niet voor één gat te vangen. Zo spelen ze nog circusmuziek
met Kanada en country met The Funerals. Gewoon omdat ze geïnteresseerd
zijn in muziek tout court, zegt bassist en toetsenman Vidar Gislason.

GISLASON: And when we're doing this type of music, we're making
this frame and we do it kind of inside those borders. But the
borders they're not that strict. If you make music in a sauna
then you will have sauna music. But if you make music while having
sex on XTC then you make techno or something. And I think a person
should be able to go to a sauna and then two or three hours later
go home and have sex on XTC. It's still the same person.

uit Moment of truth van Trabant. Die plaat is al drie
jaar oud en ondertussen is de volgende al bijna klaar. Wat dat
wordt, hoor je zaterdag misschien in het Kafee van de Vooruit.

Deze wonderlijke muziek is van Sigriur
Nielsdóttir, een dametje van 74 jaar dat in haar keuken
en slaapkamer aan de lopende band deuntjes bedenkt. Met een simpele
cassetterecorder in de aanslag speelt ze op speelgoedinstrumenten,
keukenspullen en een very basic synthesizer. Ze noemen haar in
Reykjavík de "Casio-lady" en ze is een soort
cultfiguur voor de alternatieve sien rond Kitchen Motors maar
ook Björk en múm zijn fans. In de platenzaak 12 Tónar
gaan haar cd's als zoete broodjes over de toonbank. In enkele
jaren tijd heeft ze zo maar liefst 36 cd's vol gespeeld, allemaal
voorzien van een zelf getekend hoesje en handgeschreven titels.
Maar de "Casio-lady" is en blijft een bescheiden vrouwtje
dat heel toevallig in de platenbiz rolde.
 SIGRIDUR
NIELSDOTTIR: It's a very long story and I didn't do it willing.
It came from itself. From when I was very little I'd like to
scribble down some lyrics. And I had a lot of them and later
on I started to put music to them and also to songs and hymns.
I just kept it and gave it to relatives and friends. I never
thought about selling, even not when I did my first cd. I didn't
do it to sell. I just thought everybody is going to use cd's.
And I had my first cd "Sveitasæla" made and I
was going to send it to friends, relatives and so on. I had a
friend in the music shop Japis. So one day I took one of my Sveitasæla-cd's
and said "I will show something I have made." And she
said "Why, can you let me have some more? Perhaps I can
sell it for you", she said. And so it started selling. Then
I had only one and I was talking I was soon finished with my
next one and so on. And you know, you go take a snowball and
go out in the snow and roll, it gets bigger and bigger. I never
thought I was going to do this. I like it in a way but I should
never dare to sit up in a place and play, no.
Sigriur Nielsdottir denkt er dus niet
aan om live op te treden en toch kun je op Etoiles Polaires naar
de Sigriur Nielsdottir Band. Want een gelegenheidsgroep met muzikanten
van múm, Slowblow en Kitchen Motors arrangeert haar muziek
tot echte dansnummers voor een heuse thé dansant op zondagmiddag,
gratis, in het Kafee van de Vooruit.

om half tien met zijn band in de Balzaal.

KIPPI KANINUS: My name is Gudmunder
Vignir Karlsson and my artist name is Kippi Kaninus. I use sounds
from everywhere, I guess. It's limitless. If you have enough
sound bank, you have quite enough of material to make fun music
out of it. I use many means to do that. Maybe fiddling with stuff
creating atmospheric rooms like putting microphones and creating
feedback and recording something, percussion or anything in that
room and using that as an element in songs. It can be anything
and I don't limit myself to sounds and samples made entirely
by me. I have a friend who once worked at the National Theatre
and he once gave me a cd with all kinds of strange sounds which
I sometimes used in that record and manipulated them. Like a
cow and a living room clock.
Dat was Kippi Kaninus over zijn cd Huggun
en daaruit kreeg je Tea time tones. Hij is theoloog
van opleiding, zong in een klassiek IJslands koor, maar leeft
nu in Berlijn en knutselt verder met muziek. Op 8 december kun
je zijn werk bewonderen op Etoiles Polaires om half tien in de
Balzaal. Dat is een "double bill" met Stafrann Hakon
die zijn heil zoekt in lange lappen gitaarsoundscapes. Hier is
er een uit zijn debuut.

En diezelfde avond kun je ook nog gratis naar Eberg om elf uur
in het Kafee. Misschien ken je hem nog: bijna een jaar geleden
stelden we zijn jongste cd Plastic lions voor in Cucamonga.
Eberg haalt graag dingen uit hun context. Zo wil hij wel eens
blaffen tegen de mensen als hij buiten komt. En hij neemt geen
genoegen met een gitaar en laptop om muziek te maken. Nee, daar
moeten minstens ook boren en zagen aan te pas komen. En hij vindt
ook zelf instrumenten uit, de eharp bijvoorbeeld en die lijkt
verdacht veel op een kapstok.
 EBERG:
This is a coat hanger with a volume button and a tone control.
It's got two pick-ups on it and it's got strings. And you can
tune them. It's more or less a coat hanger with guitar parts.
You just plug it in and it has some effects. It sounds ting ting
ting. I just thought it's nice as well to put something that
you use in daily life, like a coathanger or anything else, and
make a totally different use of it. It sort of twists your brain
a bit because you don't expect a coathanger to be an instrument.
But it can be, everything can be an musical instrument.

En dan zijn we aan de laatste dag Etoiles Polaires op 9 december.
Dan is er een double bill met Mari Boine en de popgroep Taima
uit het noorden van Québec in de Theaterzaal van de Vooruit.
En in de Balzaal spelen DJ's Grazzhoppa en Lamont met de Nuuk
Posse. Je houdt het niet voor mogelijk maar zelfs Nuuk, de hoofdstad
van Groenland, heeft onder zijn 15 000 inwoners een heuse hiphopscene.
Zij zetten het slotfeest in op Etoiles Polaires.
En om even als een echte IJslander
dwars te doen, gaan wij terug naar nu donderdag. Dan kun je in
het Kafee om elf uur gratis naar Jagúar. Dat is het IJslandse
antwoord op Defunkt en op Etoiles Polaires komen ze hun nieuwe
cd voorstellen. Die hebben we nog niet, maar wel een plaat die
ze eerder dit jaar opnamen met Jagúar in groot formaat.
Een big bang als het ware, met behalve de vaste band ook gasten
als Siggi Baldursson van The Sugarcubes en DJ Magic van Ghostigital.
Uit Dance, you idiot! is dit Kúbanska.
